Course:A2.
Sails: Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers
169LP genoa and Pandora main. Backstay at 3.
Set up for a starboard pole, spinnaker start. Before the start managed to place Constance between the pin and Skybird on starboard tack with the wind, 5 knots?, blowing down the river. The wind died out then came back enough on the port side to require a gybe...have not turned for the start yet. In the course of these two gybes, we managed to foul the thin, light air, starboard side spinnaker sheet and run it around the furled genoa.
Turned to port to start. Skybird immediately ditched her kite in favor of the genoa. We tried to do the same and in doing so discovered the fouled spinnaker sheet when we could not collect the sail. Gave the helm to Fred and went forward to sort things out. In the course of doing so, I must have pulled the thin, light air, starboard side spinnaker sheet across the furled genoa with enough energy to melt the dacron, creating five thin "tears" in the sail with the largest closest to the leech and each sucessive "tear" becoming smaller. Took till we nearly reached mark "A" to sort everything and douse the spinnaker. Turned dead downwind to fetch mark "A", and proceeded to chase Rinn Duin and Skybird, both of whom were far ahead.
Had the boat moving well on a reach for the next mark, with the reach broadening as we cleared Greenbury Point. Last to round the far mark in vigorous pursuit. Rounded the mark onto a starboard close hauled course. Attached the thin, light air spinnaker sheets to the lifelines, one on each side, and threw the tails overboard to wash all the twist out of the lines.
At R"8", Skybird set her spinnaker and walked away from both Rinn Duin and Constance who sailed under main and genoa from R"8" to the finish. We came to within five lengths (closer?) of Rinn Duin by R"8". Continued to chase on starboard tack. By G"1SC", we had the lead by less than half a boat. Somewhat after G"1SC", we had to tack onto port; Rinn Duin was already on port, we had been holding her down. After tacking to port, Rinn Duin immediately tried to tack us up some...to no meaningful effect. In the reach to the finish line, we lost the wind while Rinn Duin kept hers, thereby allowing her to finish about one boatlength ahead.
